Sorry, this is a double post. I made another post (this post contain's some edits to the original post) in the tech issues board. This board gets more attention.

I just went out and got my Blu-Ray Player on Monday, a Sony brand. I also got a 32 inch flat panel LCD/HD Sony Bravia TV.

My problem is:

My BD movies fill up the whole screen of the TV, there are no black bars at the top and bottom of screen. I only have 4 movies on BD:

1) The Brave One (does not say WS on label, but gives WS ratios)
2) Saw 4 (says WS on label, 1:78:1)
3) We Own the Night (does not say WS on label, but gives WS ratios, 1:85:1, I think)
4) Gone Baby Gone (does not say WS on label, but gives WS ratios, 1:85:1, I think)

Anyway, are there supposed to be black bars at the top and bottom of the screen? Do I need to adjust the settings on the Blu-Ray player? I need my black bars, doesn't feel like Wide Screen to me if I don't see the black bars.

When I watch a regular DVD (with the new 32 inch TV) on my regular DVD player (yes, a Sony) it does show the black bars. I was watching the Blade TV series. What the hell? I'm not sure if my Blu Ray player plays regular DVD's, I guess I'm going to go try it right now. I'm going to stick a regular DVD which I know to be Wide Screen into my Blu-Ray player and see 1, if it plays, and 2, if it fills the whole screen.

Also, the LCD is not very clear, or my eyesight is so good I can see every pixel on the screen. Maybe I should have stuck with regular DVD and a tube TV. Better yet, maybe I should have forked over the money for a PS 3, then I would have had a game system and a Blu-Ray player - I'm a dumbass:eek:

I took out my Blade DVD from the regular DVD player and put it in the Blu Ray player - it played. However, it was FULL Screen, not WS and not very clear. I took it out put it back into the regular DVD player and it was WS. This just proved my 32 inch Sony Bravia TV and my regular DVD are not the problem. I guess I'll have to change my settings on the Blu-Ray player. If this does not work I'm taking it back to Best Buy for a REFUND!!!!!

FYI, my Blu Ray player is model BDP-S300 - doesn't seem to get good solid reviews. My 32 inch Sony Bravia LCD Digital Color TV is model KDL-32M3000, could have sworn it had HD on it. It better be high definition.

Set the Blu-ray player to widescreen 16x9 and set the resolution to match the TV's (I think your's is 720p). I would also calibrate your TV or at least switch it to film mode. It might be to bright.

I think others on this board could help you out more.

Make sure your tv zoom mode is set to full.

I don't know about your Bravia but my sis's 26" doesn't save any settings. If this is the case than just flip through the different zoom modes.

Also the BD player's default should be set at 16x9 but I'd check that out too.

The Brave One is 2.40:1 so you should see black bars on the top & bottom.

You are obviously using an HDMI cable.? You have to go into the Blu-Ray menu and like a DVD Player do a set up and the same on your TV check out the menu. Your Blu-Ray player will upscale DVDs to 720p on your TV! They will look better than your regular DVD player for sure.

What model Blu-Ray BDPS300 or BDPS500 and TV did you get? 32 S-Series, M or XBR?

I have the BDP-S300 as well, and it plays widescreen movies properly. It is hooked up via HDMI to an LG 42" LCD and looks gorgeous! And the upscaling of standard dvd's works pretty well also. My only complaint with the player is the load time of some BD discs and once it locked up during movie and no buttons would work and I had to unplug it and plug it back in. Other than that, I have been happy with it.
