This will be the last and only thread to discuss the shuttering of the HD DVD format, players, and recorders.
The press information can be read here:
http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_02/pr1903.htm
Toshiba will not do a cold production stop, the manufacturer will continue to honor and support products covered under warranties. Toshiba will begin gradually reducing shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retailers up to the end of March 2008. The target is to stop providing new units at the beginning of April 2008.
Yep...it's official. HD-DVD is dead!

and now we hear the sound of blu-ray players and recorders prices skyrocketing.
I reported this yesterday and was rudely locked thread. My guess the person who monitors this thread was heavily invested in HDDVD :D
Although the news to come was inevitable, yesterday it was still just speculation... Today it is official word from Toshiba.

2 days before, Toshiba lashed out claiming any future support change for the format is pure false.
They can't seem to think in one direction to the next. Left foot, right foot, left foot, left foot.. Doh!
There are currently still 45 HD DVD titles on the active release list thread up until the end of May. I am curious now if these titles will remain as planned.

Did you actually believe Toshiba when they said that 2 days ago?

i was in best buy today and saw a promo for blu-ray next to regular dvd, a big difference but what is the big difference between blu-ray and HDDVD? It said Blu-Ray can hold more information on a disc than HDDVD, is this true? Blu-ray players seam to be $$$$ but havne't seen a recorder yet?

So, if you all had to place a bet - what would you choose:
A. Blu-Ray becomes more popular and replaces DVD in the
next fifteen years?
b. Blu-Ray does not catch on and DVD will remain king
for the next fifteen years?
I just don't see that much excitment on these blu-ray and
HDDV disks.

HDi is easier to program but limited in functionality compared to the harder to program & more functional BD-Java.
Oh, and the thread was locked yesterday because at the time it was a speculation/rumor/hearsay report. Toshiba made it official 5p Tokyo time 2-19-2008.

LG will continue to support HD DVD in their products!!!
They want to cater to the consumers who invested in HD DVD and will continue to provide multi-format players to retailers.

No, I don't believe any comments from a CE :D
It just looks bad for a company or studio to say 1 thing & do the entire opposite.
btw, Paramount is now aboard Blu-Ray for those who care.
